Thousand years of Buddha Luck blesses Beijing Fund Town
December 19, 2018

Changgou, Fangshan District, where Beijing Fund Town is located, has been a big town connecting the whole country since the Sui and Tang Dynasties and the Five Dynasties Period over 1,000 years ago. Although the details are not seen in the documents, the Buddha towers, Buddha statues, ceramic temples and the Buddha culture life reflected by the stone inscription could fully demonstrate the prosperity of Changgou at that time. All these rare Buddha heritages are still blessing the lucky land of Beijing Fund Town.

Since a very long time ago, the local Buddha activities around the Beijing Fund Town have been prosperous. Fangshan County Record and other records noted that the residents here have had close connections with the Buddha activities of Yunju Temple, the sacred place of Buddhism since the Tang Dynasty.

In 2005, Chongfu Temple in Changgou found a building component of Tang Dynasty temple - white marble Buddha statue. The statue is of refined cutting and smooth line, but the upper part is lost. According to the existing documents, the original words should be: "In February, Linde Third Year, Tang Dynasty, Zheng Fuhu, Fu Shanxiang and other people built Duobao Stupa for their parents. The upper is for the king, the bottom is for the masters, monks, parents to popularize the Buddha spirit."

Over 1,300 years ago, a person named "Zheng Fuhu" built a nearly 20 meters Duobao Stupa to bless parents, king and the monks. The temple was built in the third year of Linde, Tang Dynasty (666) and located in front of the Chongfu Temple in Beizheng Village of Changgou. And it collapsed in 1920s -1930s.

In June 1977, over 20 pieces of Buddha stone statues were found in a Buddha temple from Liao Dynasty here. All these statues can reflect the artistic and calligraphic features of the statue in Youzhou in Tang Dynasty from their forms and inscriptions and they are of great material value for studying the Tang Dynasty Buddha history in Beijing. But most of the statues are damaged, so only 16 pieces can be confirmed to be the remains of the statues from Tang Dynasty.

In the Liao Dynasty temple, a set of buildings from the Five Dynasties Period was also found: A ceramic Buddhism building and four ceramic towers are found. They are the most complete Buddhism cultural legacies from the Five Dynasties period by now as well as precious historical cultural relics with documentation value, art value as well as scientific research value.

Between them, the ceramic Buddhism building is made in the third year of Changxing, Emperor Mingzong, Tang Dynasty (932) after the Five Dynasties Period and made of red sand argil. At present, most Buddhism buildings are made of stone and it is rare to have ceramic buildings, especially those in the Five Dynasties Period. The four ceramic temples collapsed and damaged because of the collapse of Liao Temple. This set of temples is all made of wood-imitation materials and of special styles.

Now, Yunju Temple built in the end of Sui and the beginning of Tang is still having its morning bells and evening drums with all the wooden fish beating and endless visitors. All the people from all around the country keep coming for blessings. It is telling the thousand years of Buddha fate of this lucky land in its special way with all those Buddha towers, statues, ceramic temples and buildings in Changgou.
